Discrimination in the Book ââ¬ÅOf Mice and Menââ¬Â by John...
Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennieââ¬â¢s character. The ranch hands actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curleyââ¬â¢s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"George said, ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s gonna make a mess. Theyââ¬â¢s gonna be a bad mess about her. George says the ranch is not a place for women during he was talking about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. In addition, George described her as ââ¬Å"jail baitâ⬠. That means George thought Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is who will cause every trouble. This showed how people in the Depression, not only discriminated African-Americans; they discriminated against women, too. Steinbeck mostly used the conversation between characters to express the theme of the story. Many ranch hands were gossiping about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife because they were assuming that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is having relationship with others for money. ââ¬Å"George looked around Lennie. ââ¬Å"Jesus, what a tramp,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"So thatââ¬â¢s what Curley picks for a wife.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s purty,â⬠said Lennie defensively. ââ¬Å"Yeah, and sheââ¬â¢s sure hidinââ¬â¢ it. Cu rley got his work ahead of him. Bet sheââ¬â¢d clear out for twenty bucksâ⬠(Steinbeck, 32). In this conversation between George and Lennie, they use many offensive terms when they were talking about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. First, they assume that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife having relationship with other men for money. Secondly, when they were discussing about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, they described her as a thing that chosen by Curley as his wife. The offensive assumption by ranch hands and social beliefShow MoreRelatedRacial Discrimination In John Steinbecks Of Mice And Men899 Words à |à 4 Pageshaving to kill a friend, and bury all chances of breaking free from the life of an average migrant worker?
